One of my favorite bands from ‘back in the day’, Juluka has been described as “Jethro Tull meets Ladysmith Black Mambazo”. If that doesn’t catch your interest, Juluka was a mixed-race band playing in South Africa at the time of apartheid. This was enough – combined with their political lyrics, no doubt – to get them repeatedly arrested and beaten by police — yet they kept performing. Founding member Johnny Clegg came to Africa from England as a boy, trained with African musicians and mastered a form of Zulu dancing, featured in the video. He is known as Le Zoulou Blanc (“The White Zulu”). Juluka was disbanded in 1986, when co-founder Sipho Mchunu returned home to his village in order to look after the family cattle. Hope you like it.
